FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS

The mission

In the Alojzija Domajnko female student dormitory, we primarily strive for hominess and acceptance. The dormitory operates according to the principles of the Salesian preventive system of St. John Bosco, which means that we encourage personal and spiritual growth through formal and informal meetings. Through various activities and incentives we promote genuine joy among students, discovering themselves, God’s closeness, building sincere relationships with each other, and helping each other in various areas, including caring for the common rooms.

The student dormitory functions within the mission of the religious sisters – Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA), who accompany the students with prayer. One of the FMA sisters is present in the dormitory and is available for personal / spiritual conversations, chat or advice.

Rooms

The dormitory offers 30 beds in single or double rooms. There is also a student chapel for personal or common prayer. On each floor there is a shared kitchen with all the necessary equipment for preparing a meal. On the ground floor there is a larger hall where students’ meetings take place, and the rest of the time it is a classroom. By prior arrangement, events of a private nature also take place here. Next to the hall is a smaller room – playing room that offers a range of social games. There is also a bicycle shed on the ground floor. From the dormitory it is possible to get to the garden behind the house, which offers a beautiful view of Ljubljana. On warmer days, this is a nice place to chat or study.

Location

The dormitory is located in the old town centre of Ljubljana, bellow the Ljubljana Castle Hill. The location allows a quick retreat into nature, where we find several options for recreation. Many faculties are close to the dormitory – you can go on foot or by bicycle. In the immediate vicinity there is also a city bus station, a bicycle stop and the Church of St. James.

Activities

The student years are the years when a person builds his identity and makes important steps towards independence. In this way, self-initiative is encouraged in the dormitory. We listen to the current interests and needs of girls. At their initiative, women’s evenings were formed, where conversations about femininity take place. Many times, the starting points for conversation are female characters from the Bible. A group for couples preparing for marriage was also formed at the initiative of the students. In the dormitory, many activities take place: evenings with various guests, film evenings, St. Nicholas’ Day celebrations, birthday celebrations, preparations for the sport event Olimpiada (Olympiad), various creative workshops and much more. Sometimes skillful student hands prepare a video or organize cooking and social evenings.
Certain parts of the program are prepared by the sisters, such as spiritual evenings during Advent and Lent, the October introductory weekend, and the blessing of the house on the holy evening before the feast of the Magi.

Volunteering

The dormitory offers many forms of volunteering. As volunteers, girls can be involved in working with pre-school children – the Bible Hour program – or in working with school children in parish catechesis or religious education for children with special needs.
Volunteering is organized in holiday care programs for children as well as in the English oratory, which takes place in collaboration with animators from abroad. Wide opportunities for volunteering are also offered by various programs prepared by the community of sisters in Bled in cooperation with other animators.
Volunteering also takes place in the form of help in the garden, in the library… However, the door is always open to new suggestions and initiatives regarding volunteering.
